Orthopaedic Spine Surgery has been offered at CMC, Vellore for over 30 years. Initially the Spine service was functioning as a Subunit within the Dept. of Orthopaedics- Unit 1 . In 2009, a dedicated Spine Unit was formed. As the volume and complexity of work increased the need for specialised Department was felt and the Department of Spine Surgery was created in November of 2020.
Annually we cater to over 28,000 Out Patients with a wide spread of spinal ailments from around the country. Over 750 major spine operations are performed annually. These complex procedures cover spinal pathologies of the Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar regions. We have an active spine teaching and training program for MS Orthopaedic residents. Our popular 2 year post-doctoral Spine Fellowship program has been successfully running since 2008. Twenty One post doctoral Fellows have been trained and certified by our program.
Our Department consists of 4 Consultants. Our faculty members are well recognised Spine surgeons. Apart from their clinical duties, they have active research interests and are thesis gudes for a number of research projects. They are examiners for the MS Orthopaedics, DNB Orthopaedics, M.Ch. Spine surgery, FNB Spine surgery and ASSI Spine exam. They also serve as Inspectors for the FNB Hospital evaluations. The majority of us have been trained and mentored by Professor GD Sundararaj.
